Mount McKinley is situated in Alaska and is the highest mountain peak in North America, at a height of approximately 20,320 feet (6,194 m). The local Athabaskan native name for this mountain is Denali, which means “The Great One”. Mount McKinley is situated in Denali National Park in Alaska.
Mount McKinley is the coldest mountain in the world outside of Antarctica and temperatures are known to drop below -60ºC with a windchill of -83ºC. Its unique combination of great altitude, high latitude, and terrible weather can be a serious deterrent to many climbers due to lower oxygen levels and air pressure. The oxygen available on the summit is 47% less than that of a similar mountain along the equator.
I took this photo during one of my long haul flights flying over Alaska.
